We are lucky enough to have a pair of hummingbirds that return year after year and live in a locust tree in our backyard. Usually they are here mid to late April, but they haven’t made an appearance yet. It seems everything is a bit late this spring, our lilacs haven’t leafed out yet and I usually have a bouquet of them for Mother’s Day. Maybe the little hummers are waiting for some flowers to bloom and some leaves on the trees. In the meantime, I am getting the hummingbird feeders ready with a good washing in hot, soapy water. Be sure your feeders are clean and have no sticky residue or mold. Please do not buy the red commercial feed, homemade is quick, easy and more economical. Boil 4 cups of water, add 1 cup of sugar stirring until dissolved. Let cool completely before filling feeders. Store excess in the fridge. Don’t use honey, it will ferment and don’t use artificial sweetener as there is no nutritional value. Clean your feeders about once a week, discard feed if it looks cloudy and before you know it you will have some happy hummingbirds visiting your garden.
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? ~ Matthew 6:26 (ESV)
We finally made it to 80 degrees today for the first time this year. I haven’t seen any hummingbirds yet either
We finally had a warm day of 68°, the cherry blossoms starting opening today. Hopefully the hummingbirds won’t be far behind!
