Getting Indoor Plants Ready For Outdoors

Do you have some plants you have tried to baby through the winter so they can be added to your flowerbeds in the spring?  I have two miniature rose bushes my husband got for me that I have been moving from window to window trying to find a happy spot for them.  I’ve had to do a lot of pruning, the house is dry and we haven’t had a lot of sunlight lately.  They need to get planted outside soon!

On warmer days, move your plants outside for a few hours at a time.  Start out in a semi shady spot, then over a week or so expose them to more direct sunlight.  Don’t put them directly in bright sunlight the first day or two, you don’t want them to sunburn.  Check the moisture of the soil, if there is a breeze they will dry out quickly.  Each day increase the time outside by a half hour or so.    While it isn’t recommended to plant outdoors before Mother’s Day in our area, the plants are happy to spend the day outside and be tucked safely back indoors for the evening.

On a side note, if your perennials and bulbs are starting to come up keep be sure to keep an eye on the night-time low temperatures.  We can still get a hard frost so they will need to be protected as will fruit trees if they are budding or blooming.
