O, blackberry tart, with berries as big as your thumb, purple and black and thick with juice, and a crust to endear them that will go to cream in your mouth, and both passing down with such a taste that will make you close your eyes and wish you might live forever in the wideness of that rich moment. ~ Richard Llewellyn
My husband Brad is the best gift giver ever, I had a birthday a few weeks ago and he surprised me with two blackberry bushes! I was over the moon! I know that sounds weird but I’m not much of a jewelry girl or I guess much of a girly girl. I’d much rather have things I can watch grow and share the bounty with others. Blackberries are my absolute favorite, I can’t wait for blackberry cobbler, blackberry jam, blackberry shortcake, blackberry cordial, blackberry everything. My dad has said his mother, Grandma Hoover, made the best blackberry cobbler, I’m hoping a can find her recipe or one close to it.
Right now I am still doing the outside during the day, inside during the night business. If the weather cooperates I hope to get them planted in the next week or so. When planting blackberries it’s important to find just the right place. They can grow ten feet by ten feet and go wild pretty quickly. A trellis would be helpful for training and pruning, although not necessary. Well drained soil and at least six to eight hours of sunlight a day are important to get the most berries, as well as not letting the plant dry out. A well taken care of blackberry bush can produce ten to twenty pounds of fruit a season. I can’t wait, it will be a battle to beat the birds to the berries!
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. ~ Galatians 5:22-23
